"Tom Baker is a big, beefy guy with a soft, sweet voice. His manner is so gentle and comforting that a few doctors we know could take lessons. But Baker is a mechanic, and a wonderful one. His shop, Lawrence & Ashland Certified Repair, located at the southeast corner for which the garage is named, is nothing fancy (773 -989-0444). He's got four car ports and a lot of black-and-white photos of old-fashioned service stations. Come to think of it, old-fashioned service is precisely what you get at Lawrence & Ashland. Baker makes realistic estimates, he routinely charges a good deal less than other quality shops, and he guarantees his work. When we lost a hubcap recently, Baker passed up the chance to order a $60 replacement from the dealer. Instead, he drove his car over to Sears and bought a set of four for $25. And, as always, when we picked up the car, he insisted that we take a few cigars from his impressive collection. On the way out, we spotted a customer dropping off a big box of doughnuts for Baker and his mechanics. In a strange way, we find ourselves looking forward to the next creepy sound from under the hood."
